AS OF 1/1/98

THE TOP 100+ INTERNET SITES

WHERE A PUBLIC COMPANY'S LINKS
AND/OR CORRECT DATA SHOULD BE FOUND

ABSOLUTELY MOST VITAL SEARCH ENGINES & DIRECTORIES

The most important search aids are those found at either Netscape's search page or Microsoft Internet Explorer's search page, or both. Netscape and Microsoft both have top-tier "priority" search engines, and others they list as secondary (or even tertiary). These search engines change all the time, so check them out through these sites:
http://home.netscape.com/ Netscape's search page.
http://home.microsoft.com/ Microsoft Internet Explorer's search page.

As of 1/1/98 the top people were: Lycos (N1 E1), Yahoo (N1 E1), Excite (N1 E1), Infoseek (N1 E1), AOL NetFind (N2 E1), WebCrawler (N2 E2), LookSmart (N2 E2), Search.com (N2 E2), HotBot (N2 E2), Alta Vista (N3 E2), Electric Library (N3)

KEY: Netscape: N1 - priority, N2 - 2nd choice, N3 - 3rd choice; Explorer: E1 - priority, E2 - 2nd choice

Note that some of these search engines, themselves, plus Microsoft and Netscape, are starting to compete in the financial arena by offering services to investors!

STRATEGY FOR BEING FOUND

As your marketing people probably already know, each search engine works differently. Being found partly depends on your web pages having the right key words and META tags written in the right places for each search engine. Hopefully, your company will be found if a potential buyer looks for the product you sell. But will your company be found if a potential investor looks for it? What happens if he searches for your company name or your stock symbol? Confer with your web designer.

Some search engines and directories allow you to register not just one home page but several or all of your pages. You want to take advantage of this by registering your Investor Relations section separately, using descriptions aimed at investors rather than product customers.

If a search engine allows only limited pages to be registered, your marketing people may have already taken up all the available "slots"! (A good example is given, below, when we talk about Yahoo's "Company Reports".) Try e-mailing (or even phoning) a site's administrators to make a plea for treating your IR department as a separate site, since your IR pages have a different focus than the marketing pages.

As of 1/1/98, it is still true that a recently-registered site will tend to show up toward the top of the search engine listings. Therefore, some marketing people re-register their clients every week with each of the above important search engines! This may be overly ambitious for the investor relations department, but you do want to check the search engines periodically to make sure you are still being found. If your site goes off-line for just one second, you can bet this is the moment at which the search robot arrives and can't find you. You can get dropped from the list of sites the robot will scan henceforth.

Many search engines give higher priority to pages with numerous links to them on the theory that somebody has found them useful! Therefore, you want to be listed in the hundreds of business directories available, even if nobody has ever heard of them. This will give you a higher rating the next time the search engines scan those directories. Look for an inexpensive robotic link service to place you at as many of these as possible.

As for the more important financial sites which everybody has heard of, you want to look at these yourself to make sure your company profile is correct and that you're linked, if links are available. Request this link by hand rather than by robotic service. These important sites are listed, below.

GOVERNMENT SITE

http://www.sec.gov/ The SEC's EDGAR server - As of May 1996, EDGAR includes every publicly traded company in the U.S. You are there, but are you found easily? Some companies aren't. The EDGAR search engine leaves something to be desired. Check it out and drop them a note if investors can't find you easily. As of 1/1/98 the search page is at http://www.sec.gov/edaux/formlynx.htm

This is perhaps the most-often used financial site on the Net, so make sure your information is correct and that you're linked.
http://www.yahoo.com/
Yahoo Directory. - This is the definitive directory of sources on the Net. It is used as much as, or more than, the Search Engines. Yahoo has put together a marvelous financial site with stock prices plus many links and information for every public company. Among other things, they combine press releases from PR Newswire, Business Wire, and Reuters for each company. They use Hoover's Company Profiles.
In addition to the main information on your company, check out your data at One of the first categories Yahoo set up at their site, years ago, was "Company Reports" . Not many public companies listed themselves under "Company Reports" yet, this is an important spot! Unfortunately, these days, Yahoo strictly limits the number of places your company can be listed, and your marketing people have probably gobbled up the available slots. Try contacting Yahoo and make a case for your IR dept. to be considered as a separate site, worthy of an additional link. Make sure your data is correct and make sure you're linked wherever possible.
http://www.marketguide.com/
Market Guide - Market Guide is in the business of selling in-depth financial data. VITAL BUSINESS DIRECTORIES

http://www.directory.net/
Open Market - NOTICE: THIS HAS DISAPPEARED. Too bad! Open Market had a directory of commercial enterprises on the Net, both public and non-public. The oldest, largest, and most often used of all such sites on the Web! If you were registered there, to replace this you now need to be on a bunch of new Yellow Pages type sites.
http://mbook.com/
MarketBook - This is similar to the former OpenMarket site but smaller. May currently be the biggest such directory.
http://www/zurich.ibm.com/wwwcomdirectory.html
*.com Directory - This is a listing of web sites ending in "com/" This means a site such as "http://www.bigcompany.com/publicdata/" will not show up. You cannot, therefore, link directly your investor pages. But make sure your main URL is there, correctly.
http://netpart.com/company/
NetPartners Search of Company Websites - They get their list from the InterNic database; so this includes both public and private companies. This is the search engine we wish the InterNic offered. However, the search engine is not yet foolproof and some data is incorrect. Make sure your data is right.

ADDITIONAL SEARCH ENGINES & SITES

There are a burgeoning number of additional search engines and directories. Business listings and Yellow Pages are proliferating and ideally you want to be in all of them. One source says there are 1,000 such sites available now! Therefore, unless your budget allows for an employee, or a linking service, to spend hours and days at the task, you might look for a less expensive robotic link service to place you at as many of these as they can, easily. Remember, in another six months this group will have changed and doubled so you have to do this all over again!

Go to Yahoo! for a current list. Yahoo is at
http://www.yahoo.com/
